Soon everyone in the house will know where things belong! Storage symbols are easy to apply - here's what you need to keep in mind.
Which surfaces work?
The symbols stick well to most smooth surfaces - plastic, metal and glass all work great. Some smooth, non-stretch fabric surfaces also work, for example IKEA's Dröna storage boxes. Make sure the surface is clean, dry and smooth. If the surface has been freshly painted, wait 2-4 weeks before applying.
Prepare the surface
Always clean the surface before applying the symbol.
- Smooth surfaces of plastic, metal or glass: wipe with a dry or slightly damp cloth and allow to dry completely.
- Fabric surfaces: brush off with a clothes brush or "pat" the surface with tape to remove dust and loose particles.
What you need
Your hands and fingernails are all you really need, but a plastic scraper or credit card can be handy if you're applying a lot of symbols at once!
Your symbol comes in three layers
- Backing paper (the back - removed during application)
- The symbol itself (the design that stays on the surface)
- Transfer tape (the front - helps you position the design correctly)
Step 1: Choose your position
Hold the symbol up against the surface and decide where you want it. It helps to lightly mark where to aim the edge of the transfer tape when you get to the actual application (step 4).
Step 2: Prepare the design
Trace over the design and press firmly with your finger or fingernail along the lines. If you have a plastic scraper or credit card, rub it firmly over the front of the symbol, over the transfer tape. This helps the design bond properly before you remove the backing paper.
Step 3: Remove the backing paper
Bend the backing paper away from the transfer tape and design, and slowly peel it away. The design should now stay on the transfer tape. If any part of the design is still stuck to the backing paper, lay the transfer tape back down and rub the front a little more.
Step 4: Apply the symbol
Press the design firmly onto the surface and smooth it down with your finger, fingernail, scraper or credit card.
Step 5: Remove the transfer tape
Fold the transfer tape back on itself along the surface and carefully peel it away - don't lift it straight out. If any part lifts with it, lay it back down and rub a little more before trying again.
